Sherwood Forest In Search of Robin Hood

Major Oak Group

First a visit to Robin’s famous hiding place, the Major Oak, then cross the Birklands forest and heathland to the Centre Tree, at the middle of the old forest from Nottingham to Worksop. Through the Plantation to Blackpool, the former site of 6th Duke of Portland’s Russian Cottage, bought in 1884. Nearby stood the Shambles Oak, Robin’s larder, where the outlaws supposedly hung venison after stealing it from the King. It was blown down in a gale in the 1960’s. St. Edwin’s Cross, erected by the Duke of Portland in 1912, marks the site of a former chapel in part of what used to be the Royal Deer Park and what is now known as King John’s Palace, some 3 miles away at Old Clipston.
