Common Darter

If warm, possibly common darters and migrant hawker dragonflies.  Unusual fungi in the woods. Grey squirrels hoarding nuts and acorns. Sherwood Forest in search of Robin Hood

Sherwood Forest – Major Oak

Visit St Mary’s Church Edwinstowe site where Robin Hood married Maid Marian, then to Robin’s famous hiding place, the Major Oak. Cross Birklands forest and heathland to Centre Tree, at the middle of the old forest. Through the Plantation to Blackpool, the former site of 6th Duke of Portland’s Russian Cottage, near the Shambles Oak, Robin’s larder, where the outlaws supposedly hung venison after stealing it from the King. See the site of St Edwin’s Chapel in what used to be the Royal Deer Park and is now known as King John’s Palace, 3 miles away at Old Clipstone.
